The most wanted

She adjusted her sight in the array of blinding spotlights that flooded the studio. She sat on a revolving ‘hot’ seat with the Quiz-master right across the table. Along the circumference of the game-zone, sat the audience. Radhika could feel her stomach turning into a circus where butterflies performed dangerous trapeze-acts.

The Quiz-master explained the rules of the game. “India’s Most Wanted Questions” followed a pattern little different from the usual “how to become a millionaire” model. In fact, the rules were just the reverse. Each contestant would start with a million. They would be asked questions which ‘the nation wants to know’. The Quiz-master will pick and choose the most popular ones and pose them to each contestant. The contestants have to protect the money with right answers. With every wrong answer, the amount of money suffers diminution.

“Are you ready?”, the Quiz-master asked.
Radhika nodded in approval. The first question walked up to her. So did a lot of bafflement.
“When will you have a baby?”
All Radhika could come up with was a shocked “Huh?”.
The Quiz-master repeated. “Yes, you heard that right. When will you have a baby? The nation wants to know, Radhika”.
Radhika: But aren't babies too cute to be had? However, if you insist, I can have a baby for lunch, may be?
Quiz-master: Ten thousand rupees gets deducted from your account…..on account of over-smartness.  Anyways, tell me something. Are you trying?
Radhika: Yes I am. I am trying to get the next answers correct. I had a bad start. But I will make up with correct answers.
Quiz-master: Radhika, that question was also a part of the quiz. What a stupid answer! I am sorry to see your money vanishing at every question asked.

The third question came soon thereafter: Have you tried good doctors?
Radhika: No, never had the chance or the desire. I would rather try George Clooney. He looks delicious.
Quiz-master: Another ten thousand rupees bids you good bye, Radhika for cracking jokes that aren't funny.

The fourth missile didn't take time to arrive. “Have you tried good temples and good astrologers?”
Radhika: For what?
Quiz-master: For having a baby!
In order to come up with a correct answer, one must understand the question first. Radhika wondered whether there was actually any temple that made babies and delivered them. For the ‘astrologer’ part, she didn’t even try to visualise what it meant.

“Can I use ‘flip the question’ option?”, asked Radhika.
The question disappeared from the computer screen to give way to another.
“How frequently do you make out with your husband? Do you know the number of times one should make out to have a baby?”, the  Quiz-master asked.
Radhika: I think making love and making babies are two different concepts altogether. And so far your question goes, my husband and I have failed to achieve that ‘magic number’ just like most political parties fighting for electoral votes.
Quiz-master: Your lack of knowledge saddens me Radhika. Another ten thousand departs from your account.

Radhika’s heart break was followed by the next question.
Quiz-master: Have you tried all the desired positions?
Radhika: Yes I almost have. My most desired position was to head an entire region to begin with. Right now, I head the Eastern zone of my organisation. There are fifteen offices working under me. Huge responsibilities, managing huge number of people, handling huge clients…..are all part of my portfolio. I am one of the youngest Regional Heads of our company.
Quiz-master: Are you even listening to my questions properly? These answers are just not acceptable. Your money is vanishing at the speed of light. Another ten thousand goes, Radhika!

He continued. “Okay. Take a deep breath.  I am sure you can do better. The next question is: Aren't your in-laws telling you anything? What is their reaction to this failure of yours?”
Radhika: What will they say? I do not know what failure you are talking about. They are very proud of my achievements as an individual.
Quiz-master: For the first time, your money remains where it was. You have great in-laws indeed. They must be extremely broadminded and sympathetic people.
Radhika Google-searched for the reasons behind such high praises from the Quiz-master for her in-laws. She could not find one.

He moved on to the next question. “Do you think the relationship between you and your husband is fine? I mean, all good between the two of you?”
Radhika failed to understand the question, its relevance and its context. The blank expression on Radhika’s face invited an impromptu helpline. The question was thrown at the audience for the “audience poll”.  Option “YES” earned 15% votes while “No” won a sweeping victory.

Radhika was too tired to answer.
“I want to use my last lifeline. Phone-a-friend please.”
The Quizmaster dialed the number.
Tring tring tring……

**********************************************************
The alarm rang. Radhika woke up from her sleep.

********************************************************
The 'show' didn’t turn out the way Radhika had imagined.
The nation had its own set of “most wanted” questions.
Radhika had her own set of answers. Their questions and her answers could never become the best of friends.

“Not all your answers get friendly with the questions asked to you”, Radhika told herself.
But, some do. One such was lying in the bed right next to her. Radhika hugged her “most wanted answer”.

“Wake up!! You’ll get late for work again”.

Happy fish fries dipped in purono kashundi....

I realised for the umpteenth time that life is like a Subway sandwich (the one in which you put all the veggies and the sauces). No matter how meticulously you try to eat the thing, without the sauces or the vegetables being dropped on the tray, all you meet is heartbreak. A drop of sauce will fall down, break its crown and a slice of lettuce will come tumbling after. So what? You will still gobble up the entire thing, burp and feel happy in the end. Right. In the end, we do things that make us happy.

I did many.

I am also writing after many many days. That makes me happy.

*********************************
In the midst of the smoke and soot, one of the happiest things that happened was the Kolkata Book Fair. I visited boi mela with my parents. Just the three of us (I wish the sibling was here too).

Baba had an unusual way (unlike most parents) of Book Fair visits. He would take me along with him, we would be together for some time and then he would ask me to explore on my own. This started very early in my life and so far as I remember, I was in class 6 or 7 when this ritual started. He would rummage through his favourites while I would be left on my own, choosing and picking what I liked. Since there was no cell phone, he would fix a time when we would meet near the Guild Office. Baba’s mantra was: “If you ever feel you’re lost, just find your way to the Guild Office and make an announcement. I will find you.”

We were there in the Book Fair for more than 6 hours that day. The Publishers’ and Booksellers’ Guild office was still there. But not a single missing-person-announcement could we hear! “Bansdroni theke eshecho Babloo; tumi jekhanei thako, Guild Office er shamne chole esho. Tomar Baba–ma ekhane opekhha korchen” has disappeared into oblivion. When we were very small, one such announcement and the grip around my father’s fingers would tighten. Where have all these announcements gone? Mobile phones picked them everyone.  :(

In addition to the Eiffel Tower of new books he would buy every year, Baba also bought used and old books and magazines. His children turned out non-exceptions. I remember my brother buying a second-hand Shakti Chattopadhyay book from College Street which was author-signed!! At the book fair, I find old magazines fascinating. Every year, I make sure I buy some. More than the articles, what amaze me are the advertisements on print. This is this year’s favourite of them of all (an advertisement by the Central Tea Board) published years back. Someone was right. In simplicity, lies the ultimate sophistication.

There were a few more. While Keo Karpin and P.C. Chandra still exists (the animated woman in the latter replaced by Deepika Padukone and the likes), this simplicity and warmth has gone hibernating. Similarly, ‘Lungi’ advertisements and ‘biscuits in tins’ are obsolete (Of course, fancy cookies in tins are still available, but I am offffviously not talking about them). And, you know what! All these magazines were published at a time when my parents didn’t even complete the first decade of their lives (between 1960 to 1964, that is) :D

Old books also remind me that some of the publishers have come out with reprints of the originals. The original covers, fonts, size of the book are all kept intact and published afresh. ‘Pagla Dashu’, ‘Toontoonir Boi’, ‘Haw Jaw Baw Raw Law’ are some of them. Preciousness!

Baba used to buy books. And buy more books. When his arms gave in, he would keep the packets in one particular (friendly) book stall and say “egulo rakhben, ami aro kine phirey shob eksathe niye jabo” (Take care of these books, till I come back). Packets would be deposited in several installments and in the end, those would be distributed among all his family members who would carry 6 to 7 packets each and come back home. This year, he was not the only one who did that. Genes!

Genes! In at least 4 shops, Baba and I discovered, while billing, that we have chosen (separately, of course) the SAME books. What goose-bumps-filled coincidences they were!  To add to the thrill, ALL those books were rare/unusual books. I was about to keep them away, when Baba pointed out, “Don’t. Keep one for your house as well”. So we bought one copy each. While, we secretly felt happy at the concurrence of our choices, I think we both gobbled up the lumps in the throat at the thought that we live in two different houses.

But then, Book Fair always has happy things in store that dilute all lumps in the throat. In one of the stalls, I found this book on Gorky. The picture instantly reminded me of Apur Shonshar. And, that drew a smile.

I also feel immense joy in discovering small pockets of ‘entrepreneurship’ in the midst of these huge events. Every time there is a match at Eden Gardens, there are people who make quick money by painting Indian tricolor on the cheeks. Five for a single cheek, ten for two. One such at the Book Fair is covering the newly bought books with cellophane (read molat). People dump their bags full of books and these gentlemen constantly put jackets around them. (picture on bottom left).

The huge display of art on the ground also makes a very happy sight. The dominance of Rituporno Ghosh and Suchitra Sen over Ma Durga, Rabi Thakur and Uttam Kumar in terms of portraits was this year’s highlight. I make it a point that alongside books, I buy at least one piece of art from the fair. The umbrella (picture on top left) was this year’s loot. Hand-painted patachitra on ‘K.C. Paul-er chhata’.

I did not notice the Benfish stall this time. I saw ‘Fish Fish’ selling like hot cakes, sorry fish. One fish fry was for 80 Rupees. Baba whispered, “Had it been Benfish, I would have said, ‘What will you eat?’. The prices at Fish Fish make me say, ‘What!! Will you eat?’“. :)

Because Book Fair and Valentine’s Day are next door neighbours, I didn’t miss the chance of impressing that special someone. “Shohag” is Artist Ramananda Bandopadhyay’s personal diary of words and art on print. “Protikhhon” (the stall from where I bought it) had a Pandora’s Box of collection. Rarest of rare books, diaries, and paintings. Abanindranath Thakur’s diary in which he penned anecdotes for his grandson was also on print. He used the diary as a scrap book and each page had either paper cuttings or self-sketched pictures to make it interesting for the grandson. The print is an EXACT representation of the same. *put-me-into-the-ventilator-moment*

To make my situation worse, the owner decided to offer a discount of 35% on the books, instead of the usual 10% for some his chosen customers. ;)

To add to the happy things, a slice of “chhelebela” made its entry into my book shelf in the form of Nonte Phonte Somogro. :D

Good things come to an end. So does the Book Fair. What remains is the Kolkata Police placard which guides you with right ‘directions’….towards the book fair.

Alcha..

This is a long pending post. (I love this sentence; every time I use it, I get a feeling that the whole world was waiting for this post with nail-chewing breathlessness).

I have been to Alcha umpteen number of times. And, with every visit, the heart grows fonder. I mentally wished to write about them the same umpteen number of times, but a gentleman called Procrastination would wind my fingers with bright red ribbons and tie cute little bows (which I generally refuse to untangle).

A few days back, a friend went to Shantiniketan and posted photos of Alcha café. Let me add to this post, at the very outset that Alcha has two sections, a store and a café. I enquired if she visited the store as well. She fell from up-above-the-world-so-high and answered in negative.  I was determined that I would wash my hands of her. I mean, the store and the café are in the same compound and how could one miss either of the two?

Being the generous soul that I am, I dropped the idea of disowning the otherwise wonderful friend of mine and decided to write this post on my favourite store (I wonder how photo pe aisi baat mein dabake chali aayi for so long).

Alcha is a quaint little shop in Ratanpalli, Shantiniketan (5 minutes ricksaw-ride from the University campus; Phone : 0346-364-5272). The narrow dusty road is ornamented by Krishnochura (Gulmohar) trees on its sides. (In the picture however, you can hardly see flowers; you can spot two or three monkeys instead.)

Alcha is as beautiful as its name suggests. The whole compound is layered with shades of greens and pinks. Madhobilota (Rangoon creeper) and Bougainvillea grow here in abundance.

The moment you open your shoes and step onto its red cemented floor, you are transported to a different world. Weaves of various kinds greet you at the entrance. The weaver bird’s nest turned into a lamp and left-over kantha and khhesh fabrics mounted on the wall will instantly woo you with their simplicity.

What awaits you is the Wonderland of Alice. At every nook and corner, you will find indigenous hand crafted items…. fabric ornaments, Dokra/ beaded jewelry, kantha bags and batuas, block printed and batik sarees, ready-made printed blouses, gamchha and khhesh curtains, cushion covers, wall hangings, fridge magnets from left over fabric, lamp shades, jewelry boxes, coconut shell candles, handmade soaps and the list is as long as “office-time-e-Metror-ticketer-line”. (Their in-house label is known “Abokaash” meaning ‘leisure’)

The first thing that invariably catches my attention every time I visit them, is their ornaments section. Their fabric-ornaments and Dokra pieces are innovations at their best.

I saw this cute little butterfly and caught it with my camera lens. What a pretty sight it made!

The dupattas, stoles and blouses are stacked in big cane baskets. The readymade blouses are pocket friendly, priced mostly at a humble 350. You get halter-necks, boat-necks, t-shirt necks, knotted backs and many more….quirky, kitsch, stylish.

The Khhesh fabric has been put to use by Alcha in all its possible forms….sarees, curtains, cusion covers, bags, boxes and bedspreads. The same story holds good for Kantha.

Alongside sarees, Alcha also has a wide range of apparels for men, women and kids. Their leather products are unusually beautiful.

Their home accessories section is on the first floor. They have beautiful hand painted mirrors, ceramic crockery sets, kantha lampshades, Patachitra-painted boxes, handmade paper wall hangings, cushion covers, quilts and curtains of various colours and textures. Mind-blowing collection and must-must-must-buy stuff.

Their collection of soft toys-turned-fridge-magnets-turned-tabletop-decorations is terribly cute and you would go mad at the profusion of choices. Their assortment of wrapping papers, mostly block-printed old newspapers, also stands out in the crowd.

Go. Visit Alcha. Just stroll in the store, bask in the beauty of their hand-crafted products, buy if you like and then head straight to their café. The café has a tiny bookstore which lends you books to read while you gorge yourself with a fat and fluffy omelet and take sips from the steaming cup of chaa.

Aaah! Abokaash, at its best…. : )

A few years back, Ma had given me a wooden comb from Shonibarer Haat in Shantiniketan. It was tucked carefully in my jewellery box and remained unused. It was too beautiful for combing hair. I would often hold it in my palm, look and put it back where it belonged.
*********************************
For the past few years, I have always tried to make (on my own) at least one piece of jewellery for myself for Pujo. This year, I had an unusually busy schedule and all these high hopes disappeared in oblivion. (Even yesterday morning, I was revising and adding to my Grumble-List and this was one of the primary items).
*********************************
Yesterday, while buying something from a local grocery store, I discovered a quaint little sewing shop in my para. Instantly an idea made a Jack-in-the-box act. I bought six Anchor embroidery threads. Pocket pinch: 30 rupees only!!! (the lips spread ear-to-ear, curving a reverse-rainbow across my face).

I came back home and in fifteen flat minutes, my jewellery was ready (including clicking these photos).

The only thing that is left now: “Eta pore manja dewa!” *mentally singing this* :D

“The Lunchbox” আবার দেখতে।

জনৈক – “To kill a talking bird”)।

Cindrellar

Split Personality Disorder।

(২০১১-য় যেমন ছিল অর্ণব রায়ের "May I hebb your attention pliss")।
  • God is not great - Christopher Hitchens. রিচার্ড ডকিন্স একটা দারুণ কথা বলেছেন লেখকের ব্যাপারে : "If you are a religious apologist invited to debate with Christopher Hitchens, DECLINE."
  • Kitnay Aadmi Thay? - Diptakirti Chaudhuri. "Movies should have a beginning, a middle and an end" - Georges Franju, "But not necessarily in that order" - Godard.

D. Burman: the man, the music', অনুপম খেরের 'The best thing about you is You'।

"A. K. De".
