I wish...

·        I had a feather in my wallet. On low-mood days, I would take it out and scratch my ears. Bliss!

·     Someone could gift a ‘3 to 5 years’ activity book and a box of crayons on my birthday. I would colour apples, oranges, airplanes and Noddies, join the dots and spot the difference.

·    Showing of/off the cleavage was an easy task and could be done effortlessly, without feeling shy.

·        I could sing the “jo bhi chaahe kahiye” part of “Raat akeli hein..” without cracking my voice or sounding demented.

·      I had clicked a photograph with that bride whose wedding we had crashed. That way, I could remember her face forever.

·        I could share a fistful of bread crumbs with a sparrow. Right now.

·     I had a huge poster of Heath Ledger in his Joker avatar on my bedroom wall. It would be sexy!

·  People could understand that “making love” and “trying for a baby” aren’t synonymous.

·    The joy of reading “predictions for the day” (with pictures of Madhuri/Salman/Sanjay Dutt) on weight cards at the Metro/Railway station was not inversely proportional to the weight it reflects.

·        Walls had ears. And eyes. They could make great friends.

·        I could lead the life of a concubine atleast for a day.

·        Red lipsticks and red nailpaint looked lovely on me.

·        I could name the lizards on my wall. I have somehow grown to love them.

·        Mondays never existed. And the second half of a Sunday.

·        The “Finding Nemo (3D)” poster wasn’t this cute. “Sea the greatest underwater adventure in 3D”.

·     People realised that a plant makes a better gift than a bunch of flowers. On birthdays and anniversaries.

·        I could work at the Security Check of an Airport or a shopping mall. It would be fun to peep into strangers’ purses.

·        They had perfumes with ‘phenyl’, ‘naphthalene’ and ‘petrol’ fragrances.

·        I could wear more of Khhadis, Kanthas and Kalamkaris.

·        Once in my entire lifetime, someone would ask for my autograph.

·        I could make love to a 40-something year old Rabindranath Thakur (for days).

·        I could tell my man about it.

·        I never wished so much…

  1. I wish you had used numbers, not bullets. Anyway, assuming numbers -
    1 Doable
2 Let's see what can be done about this
    3 Doable
    4 Maybe doable; keep trying
5 A newspaper ad might help
    6 Doable
    7 Doable
8 Not dependent on you, hence mostly impossible
    9 Dependent on chance
    10 Not possible
    11 Doable
12 No idea what you're talking about
    13 Doable
    14 Not possible
    17 That's a wish?
18 There are people like that
    19 Doable
20 I think these exist; I had read somewhere
21 Once again, I have no idea what you're talking about
22 May I have your autograph? Not for me but for my teenage nephew...?
    23 Not possible
    24 Doable, if you lie
    25 Not possible

Check the number of doables. Use a checklist maybe.

    1. As you must have noticed, I've forgotten to count. I've missed 15 and 16 and goodness knows what.

    2. Well, Your wish shall be granted. From the next time I shall number them instead of bulleting.
And now my observations on your observations:-
      1. Yes. It is. The only concern is to find the right feather.
      2. Ok. My birthday is on 20th December. You see.
      3. I know. Let me see how.
      4. I never stopped trying. However the man says “you can seduce me with easy songs as well”. So, no results yet.
      5. Yes. A newspaper ad may help them to find us. WANTED: Wedding crashers!!
      6. Is it? There are hardly any sparrows in the city.
      7. Have to ask my room-mate. He may not be able to take so much of competition.
      8. Well yes. Sigh!
      9. Dependant on what the weight is.
      10. I know. And still they think that the first part is true.
      11. Yes. How…that I have to figure out.
      12. Am glad you didn’t.
      13. Not an easy task. Too many and too similar. And appropriate names would take time. Daaknaam rakhle oboshhyo randomly choose kora jabe.
      14. Yep. Deep sigh!!!
      17. Yes. I could see it from a hospital window and it was so bloody cute and tempting that I wished I ran away and saw it instantly. I couldn’t. Read: Hospital.
      18. Tell those people that I love them. And why are they so few?
      19. May be a newspaper ad will help.
      20. Post me the link/ or that particular page of the book. I want to read it.
      21. I am glad you have no idea.
      22. Stops blushing and replies: I want to meet him and ask why?
      23. Sighs and faints.
      24. Joler Jhapta diye jaganor por: Why lie? He is not a kid.
On another note, he asked me oneday, “what would you have done if Rabi Thakur was alive?” My answer: Shantiniketan e ghhono ghhono daily passengeri kortam nana ochhilay, toke mithhye bole. Tarpor boltam, “aj bojrobidyut soho probol brishti”, “aj rail dhormoghot”, “aj sadharon dhormoghot”….train bondho. raate bari phirte parchina aj.
      25. You are right.

    3. :) I read the blog post and was all smiles. Then I read this comment and your reply to it.. and was laughing. I do hope the rest of the family does not wake up thinking I have lost it. :)

      Hi Parama,

I could ditto some of your wishes. Specially no 25. :) :) But here's a secret. Those born on 20 (of any month) are eternally condemned to wish. So they can never not wish. Something to do with numerology. When the items in their checklist get ticked they simply keep adding more and more... and usually more of the 'non-doable' kind like no 23. I know cause I was born on 20th of another month and know 5 more such people. :)

Haila! Just noticed the date. These posts are from 2012. I hope you still read the replies. :( In any case, your posts are fun to read. :)

      Regards,
      Jyoti

    Dear Ms.Ghosh,

There isn’t a chance in the world that you would know me. And honestly I didn’t know you either until a month ago. It so happens that we have a friend in common – Sohini Mukherjee. And so while I still can’t claim to know you, I would however like to compliment you on your wonderful blog.

Brilliant – would be an understatement. The writing is breezy, funny and pleasant – be it the insight into the Bong life, or the conversation between P & J (‘J’ has a wicked humor too btw), or your love for the heavenly cuppa, each piece is a treat to read. Heck, I even tried reading your last blog in Bengali hoping to catch an inkling of meaning. I gave up after the second line though.

In conclusion all I would like to say is that I will be one of the first buyers the day you publish a book (which I see as imminent). All the best!!

    Regards
    Sunil Namboothiri

(P.S.) Happiness: Reading Bong without knowing the language and yet understanding the meaning. Priceless!

  5. Hi Sunil,
See it sounds so much better! Parama similarly will. (Not just because Parama is lovely name, otherwise also).
I dont know you, true. But I know of you through the same source of course.
Now directly to the point. Man, I am so happy to know that you read my blog. Most importantly so minutely. What more can I ask for? Your "P.S: happiness" part is a reason enough for making me happy for an entire week and more. Thank you is a loosely used term. Otherwise I would have definitely used that. I think you deserve a little more than that.
Will write more...thats all I can say.
For the "publishing a book" part, I ended up in meaningless giggles punctuated with "yeaaaahs" and blushes. It was a bit too much, I later realised. Dont be so sweet to me.
Keep reading. And please keep letitng me know.
    Truly touched, Parama...

  6. Nice to know you like the Joker.

He is my dronacharya & I am his ekalavya.

Someday I would burn a mountain of notes..

& I would say ,"All you care about is money. This town deserves a better class of criminal, and I'm gonna give it to 'em...It's not about money... It's about... sending a message. Everything burns!"

& that day is coming soon!
